We might not be ready to think about it just yet, but ready or not winter is quickly approaching. Colder temperatures can be hard on trucks, and winter weather impacts driving conditions. Regardless of your daily application, it's important to make sure your truck is ready for the changing conditions. Thompson is your TOTAL TRUCK solution, and we are ready to help you prepare for winter:

Have the right truck. The very first step in preparing your truck for winter is to make sure you have the RIGHT truck for your application. Not all trucks are made it equal when it comes to pushing snow and navigating winter conditions. Thompson inventory is changing every day, but right now we have this preowned snow plow traded from a local municipality, equipped with fresh aluminum wheels, and ready to get to work today.

Coolant Systems. It’s imperative to make sure that your truck’s anti-freeze system is strong enough to handle colder temperatures. Check ph, chloride, and sulfate content - we recommend using Fleetguard quick check test strip for this test. You can order those using our free online parts ordering system, RepairLink. This is also a great time to check your vehicle fluids and refill if necessary. Check and top off power steering, brake, windshield washer, and battery fluids.

Truck Tires. As the roads become slick with winter elements, consider outfitting your truck with winter tires which offer a better grip in icy conditions. Make sure the tread depth is adequate and they are inflated correctly. Underinflated tires are one of the leading causes of tire failure, and a tire can lose up to 50% of its pressure before it has the appearance of being flat. To find out the correct amount of air for your tire, review your owner’s manual or contact Thompson Tire & Retread.

Battery Life. The most common cause of winter breakdowns is a weak or dead battery. The typical life cycle of a battery is 48 to 72 months, but cold temperatures drain battery life faster so it’s important to keep an eye on it. Battery maintenance should also include cleaning and securing connections and mounting brackets.

Lights & Exterior. The days are getting shorter, which means it is darker longer. Visibility is very important to maintain safety for your drivers. Check all lights to make sure they are in working condition. This is also a great time to check windshield wipers for damage and replace if necessary. You will need clean wiping ability as the snow falls in the coming months. You can order new lights and wipers here if needed.

Oil. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, check your oil. The colder the weather outside, the thicker your oil becomes, and once it gels up it will not circulate through your engine. If your engine doesn’t get the lubrication it needs, you’ll be left with a truck that won’t start. Consult your owner’s manual for proper oil levels for different climates. This is also the perfect time to replace your DEF tank filter screen and DEF pump filter. Schedule service now.

The certified technicians at Thompson Truck & Trailer are dedicated to keeping your truck running through the winter. By taking the extra time now, you could save yourself a breakdown in the future.
